Cloth Nappy Life in an Apartment

Andrea shares her cloth journey with her 8.5 month.

We decided we wanted to try cloth nappies before our son was born last year. I have been a big fan of reusable period products for years, and I thought that similarly, reusable nappies would feel nicer for him, as well as being better for the environment.

We started out with a newborn loan from the Cloth Nappy Library to see what kind of nappies we like best. Because we live in an apartment with limited space, we also wanted to make sure that we could handle the extra laundry before making a big up-front investment in cloth nappies.

Our favorite nappies right now are all-in-twos.

  • They produce less laundry as you don't need to wash the cover with every nappy change;
  • and can be very quick-drying depending on the kind of absorbency you choose.
My mum recently turned some old t-shirts into preflats, which are working great for us at the moment!
Attached is a picture of our laundry room, which is also where we change our baby and keep all our nappies and baby clothes.

Soiled and pre-washed nappies all go in the laundry basket on the left (separated with a mesh bag) and we wash every 2-3 days.
